From April 1 through June 1 burning is restricted to after 6:00 pm on the EAST side of River Road, per the Town of Sterling fire ordinance. June 2 through March 31, there are no restrictions for burning unless the DNR has posted a high fire danger, then NO burning is allowed at any time. For those WEST of River Road, a DNR burning permit is required at all times. You can also call 888-WIS-BURN or check the DNR website at http://dnr.wi.gov/forestry/fire/index.htm.
All dogs in the Town of Sterling must have a dog license. Licenses are issued by the Town Treasurer after the proof of current rabies vaccination is submitted. Dog License form can be downloaded from the forms and permits tab. Please do not include dog license payment on your property tax payment. Send form, verification of current rabies vaccination and payment to Julie Peterson, Treasurer, Town of Sterling, 13308 Bucklund Rd, Grantsburg, WI 54840.

Polk County Recycling Center-1302 208th St, St Croix Falls, WI 54024, 715/483-1008 Hours of Operation: Monday through Thursday 6:45 am -4:40 pm. For more information see Polk County Recycling Center link under the link tab. There is also a 24 hour recycling bin located at the Cushing Co-op, Pick up is scheduled every Tuesday. Please check your recyclables, ALLOWED ITEMS are Plastic # 1 & 2, glass, aluminum (not tinfoil, not take out containers), tin, paper and cardboard.

Tax bills are printed mid-December and mailed by your local treasurer. Once tax bills have been printed the tax bill amounts are available on the Polk County website. The first installment is due January 31 and payable to the Sterling Town Treasurer, Julie Peterson ,13308 Bucklund Rd, Grantsburg, WI 54840. The second installment is due July 31 and payable to the Polk County Treasurer, 100 Polk County Plaza, Suite 150, Balsam Lake, WI 54840, 715/485-9255. The Town of Sterling does not accept on-line payments or credit card payments. Please pay by check or cash.
Property Tax Refund Policy-can be found under the Ordinance/Resolution tab-The Town of Sterling adopts the following policy: Property tax overpayments under $5.00 will only be refunded upon request. Contact Sterling Town Treasurer.
Once property taxes become delinquent the full amount becomes payable immediately. This means if you are late with your first installment you no longer have the two-payment option. Building Permits are necessary for any construction or renovations covered by the Uniform Dwelling Code (UDC) or Town ordinances. Sanitary Permits are required for any new dwelling. Land Use Permits are required before you build, move or structurally alter any structure in the Town. Land Use Permits are also required before you add to any existing structure or replace an existing structure with a new structure. Such structures include but are not limited to houses, barns, sheds, pole barns, decks, etc.

The Town Board of Sterling holds their regular scheduled meetings the third Monday of the month at 7:00 pm. All meetings are held at the Government Center located in the Cushing Community Center, 2510 241st St, Cushing, WI 54006. Any deviation in the schedule will be posted as well as listed on this website under Agendas.

Meetings will be posted on this website. Agendas are subject to changes and will be posted according to WI Stats no later than 24 hours before the meetings. In case of emergency’s a 2-hour posting is legal. Meetings and notices requiring publishing are published in the inter-county leader and the Indianhead Advertiser.
Call the Clerk at 715/ 220-9399 to set up a time to drop off tails and fill out the Gopher Bounty form, located in the permits and forms tab, you must list the addresses where the gophers were harvested. ONLY POCKET GOPHER’S TAILS are accepted. The current gopher bounty is $3.00 per whole tail (no partial tails). Your check will be mailed after the next monthly Board of Supervisors meeting.
